Meteorological controls on daily variations of nighttime surface urban heat islands

چکیده
Most previous studies of surface urban heat islands (SUHIs) have focused solely on their controlling factors a seasonal/annual timescale, while the controls daily variations are largely unknown. By extracting nighttime SUHI features using Gaussian model and investigating correlations with various explanatory factors, we attempted to determine SUHIs daily-basis over Chinese cities. Specific weather conditions intensity, extent, shape, centroid were identified. Our results show that: (1) intensity (SUHII) was considerably more sensitive than footprint (i.e., centroid). (2) Meteorological variables including relative humidity, accumulated precipitation, aerosol optical depth, had greatest impact intensity; whereas related temperature fluctuations (day-to-day air temperature) main influencing direction in which varies. (3) Antecedent precipitation substantially impacted subsequent under clear-skies, changing both itself its sensitivity other factors. Typically, clear-sky directly following rainfall showed higher dependence soil moisture aerosol, but less affected by wind. (4) The meteorological contributions SUHIIs varied among cities different bioclimatic conditions. In general, they stronger temperate zones subtropical zones. provide an improved understanding as well foundation for predicting based variables. • Surface Urban Heat Island examined. Weather contribute extent shape. affect SUHII discrepancies periods without rainfall.

Role of City Texture in Urban Heat Islands at Nighttime.
An urban heat island (UHI) is a climate phenomenon that results in an increased air temperature in cities when compared to their rural surroundings. In this Letter, the dependence of an UHI on urban geometry is studied. Multiyear urban-rural temperature differences and building footprints data combined with a heat radiation scaling model are used to demonstrate for more than 50 cities worldwide...
متن کاملComparing the diurnal and seasonal variabilities of atmospheric and surface urban heat islands based on the Beijing urban meteorological network
This study compared the diurnal and seasonal cycles of atmospheric and surface urban heat islands (UHIs) based on hourly air temperatures (Ta) collected at 65 out of 262 stations in Beijing and land surface temperature (Ts) derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer in the years 2013–2014. We found that the nighttime atmospheric and surface UHIs referenced to rural cropland stat...

متن کاملVariation of daily warm season mortality as a function of micro-urban heat islands
BACKGROUND Little attention has been paid to how heat-related health effects vary with the micro-urban variation of outdoor temperatures. This study explored whether people located in micro-urban heat islands are at higher risk of mortality during hot summer days. METHODS Data used included (1) daily mortality for Montreal (Canada) for June-August 1990-2003, (2) daily mean ambient outdoor tem...
متن کاملUrbanization Effects on Vegetation and Surface Urban Heat Islands in China's Yangtze River Basin
In the context of rapid urbanization, systematic research about temporal trends of urbanization effects (UEs) on urban environment is needed. In this study, MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) land surface temperature (LST) data and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) data were used to analyze the temporal trends of UEs on vegetation and surface urban heat islands (SUHIs) at 10 bi...
